Online Sociology Degree Programs

Colleges are offering an increasing number of online degrees. The necessity of continuing to work while going to school is common among many of today's college students. Sociology degrees offered online can be taken at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Columbia College:  Columbia College in Columbia, Missouri, has emerged as a leader in online education
in recent years. The college offers numerous online regionally accredited degree options. The college was accredited in 1918 by the North Central Association and has retained accreditation ever since.

Columbia offers an online bachelor of arts in sociology. The program includes studies in most of the basic aspects of human society and its concerns. Special topics of study include environmental concerns, racism and sex discrimination, among others. Courses included in the sociology curriculum include ethics, contemporary and classical social theory, criminology, social deviance, class, status and power and the sociology of religion.

University of Colorado Denver: Part of the University of Colorado system, the University of Colorado at Denver (UCD) offers students a number of online degree opportunities including a bachelor of arts in sociology. Like the program at Columbia College, UCD focuses on the basic aspects of sociological study including the processes that govern social systems and the macrostructures of society. Special areas of concern include studies in race, family, gender, social classes and the ongoing process of globalization. Courses offered include historical sociological theory, global issues, statistics, research methods and the sociology of education, among others.

New Mexico State University: At the master's degree level, New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico, offers one of the few fully accredited online graduate degree programs in sociology. The program offers a master of arts degree in sociology and requires that students entering the program already have obtained the bachelor's degree in sociology.

Because of the independent nature of online study, the program does not admit students with degrees in other areas; students must already have a firm grasp of sociological issues and methods. This program delves deeper into sociological research, preparing students to eventually obtain the doctorate. Lasting about two years, the program offers courses in comparative family studies, organizational sociology, world systems and education, globalization, medical sociology, the sociology of religion and studies in social class distinctions.

Studying on the Internet

Online degrees have become very popular in recent years and for good reason, they are a great way to improve your credentials for work. Unfortunately a lot of people who set out to get an online degree fail to complete the program, usually because they don't really think about what is involved in studying on the internet. There are important differences between online degrees and traditional degrees and you need to keep this in mind before you enrol in an online program. Most people seriously underestimate the work involved on online study and take on far more than they can handle.

There are plenty of good reasons that you may want to study on the internet and earn an online degree. These days in order to get ahead at work it is usually necessary to enhance your academic credentials, the days when you went to college and then got a job and where finished with school are long gone. Most of your competitors for jobs or promotions will have an advanced degree, usually earned online. The growth of online learning has resulted in an increase in the level of education required for most jobs, since more people have advanced degrees more jobs now require them. This means that for most people earning and online degree is no longer a way of getting ahead at work it is now a requirement just to keep up.

The great advantage of an online degree is that you can study at a time that is convenient for you so that you can schedule your studies around work. This means that you can get a degree while continuing to hold down a job. The problem is that most people seriously underestimate the amount of work that is involved in getting an online degree. The work load for an online degree is the same as that for a traditional degree program, if you are carrying a full time course load you need to be able to put in full time work. Many people in their rush to get through their degree program enrol in more courses than they can handle and end up not finishing at all. If you are holding down a full time job it is nearly impossible to take a full time course load, especially if you have other responsibilities like a family.
